The first Adirondack chair was designed in 1903 by a man named Thomas Lee, while he was on vacation in the Adirondack mountains in New York state. Typically they were made from 11 flat, wooden boards, and the final product would include a flat backrest, as well. Now, the back is often (but not always) rounded, but the original spirit of the Adirondack lives strongly in these innovations, and in many other chairs that are based closely on its design.

Plastic is an inexpensive option for outdoor furniture, but it isn't comfortable or luxurious. For temporary outdoor furniture or spare chairs for when guests come over, it can be a good option.
The seat sits considerably high also. The front edge sits just over 16-inches tall while at the lowest point, the seat is tad bit taller than 10-inches. Which for an adirondack chair, is quite impressive. Well for the taller people anyways.
As with all furniture, Adirondack chairs do have a weight capacity on them. This capacity will vary depending on which model you go with. However, finding out that information can be harder then you think, with not every company being upfront about it. For me, this usually means they have an industry-standard weight capacity of between 200 and 220 pounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very comfortable - comes with all hardware I purchased 4 chairs and all 4 came out great! I used a drill to screw most of it in, just make sure to stop it without overtightening. I had no problems at all. My daughter and I put most of it together. Each one fit perfectly. But we let my husband use his strength to tighten the lock bolts in. I was too weak for that, but he had no problem at all. We did not have to buy any other hardware. I have not painted them yet. We used them and sat for hours over a fire pit all weekend. They are very charming and comfortable. I like that they are light weight. We are four adults weighing from 105 to 200 pounds and all the chairs were fine. Happy with purchase! Yes, they're a wee bit small - that was perfect for us since our patio is so tiny. The assembly was actually quite easy; the directions were very clear, and we managed to build them in about an hour apiece.
