Now back to the project at hand: After getting acquainted at The New Yankee Workshop, Abram and I first inspected the original Adirondack he built, one based largely on a design his father had used years ago. It had weathered well and withstood the elements for more than a decade in continuous outdoor duty. He explained it was made from cypress, an excellent choice for outdoor projects, and he had laid in a supply for our new chairs.

Getting out of an Adirondack chair isn’t as easy as getting out of a regular chair. However, this depends solely on the person, trying to get out of an Adirondack chair.
Though the features described above are the main ones to look for, there are a few extras you may want to keep an eye out for. One is the design of the chair. There should be some contouring in the back and seat to increase your comfort level. There may also be some special additions to the design, like the pull-out ottoman on the Polywood HNA15TA or the cup holders on the ECCB Outdoor Outer Banks Deluxe Oversized Adirondack Chair.

This Adirondack chair is made of mahogany wood, which has a natural darker reddish color. This particular wood is also heavier but is well known for being durable. In fact, Mahogany wood can last up to 40 years with consistent maintenance.
Unfortunately a pillow will not magically make this chair look good here. Sometimes there is no magic if the wrong colour choice is made, YET AGAIN. Maria I’m not in doubt at my house and I have purple, turquoise and chartreuse which look lovely against my blue-gray house with periwinkle trim. I don’t use them a lot for the reasons others have stated, but they add a lot of fun color to our large deck. We do our serious sitting on wood rockers or zero gravity loungers.
The first benefit is related to the chair’s design. They were created in 1903 by an amateur woodworker named Thomas Lee to remedy a lack of seating during vacations in the Adirondack Mountains. Traditional chairs, with even legs and straight seats, couldn’t be used on the hilly terrain of the area, so Lee designed his chair to match the terrain. This new design allowed these chairs to be placed on hilly areas while still providing comfort and relaxation to those sitting in them. Even with modern updates in materials, this design has remained the same, so these chairs can be used almost anywhere.
The Highwood AD-KING1-ACE is our top choice for Adirondack chairs because it checks all the boxes. The most significant advantage that Highwood has over others is its remarkable high-grade polyethylene lumber material. Polyethylene lumber is designed to look like luxurious wood, but molded like plastic for comfort. This particular chair even can adjust your reclining angle, which the others cannot do.
Pros: it is made from genuine Polywood lumber; very easy to assemble; easy maintenance which requires no painting, waterproofing or staining; all-weather durability; fade-resistant color.

Composite materials will always be more durable than wood because they are built to last. They are a lot more attractive than polyester too.
While many people prefer the look of natural wood over faux alternatives, it’s safe to say that the former requires a more intensive maintenance process. If you want a high-quality Adirondack chair with an appearance that’s strikingly similar to real wood, check out this model from Lifetime. It’s engineered with durability in mind considering the weather-resistant material which is a breeze to clean. You won’t have to worry about stains or cracking as you would if you go for the classic natural wood options. The sturdy polystyrene material is resistant to UV light and will never require a fresh paint or varnish. When it comes to the design of the chair, it’s safe to say that Lifetime ensured a decent level of comfort when you take into account the thick armrest and overall ergonomics. The weight capacity of 300 pounds is quite solid as well.
You may also want to look for a coating to prevent any UV damage like fading or deterioration of the materials. A textured finish gives the chair a wood-like texture, making it look more authentic.
The boards are unfinished and I noted several places with putty patches. This was not an issue for me because I painted mine. If you plan to stain them it may be a problem because my putty marks were right on the arm rest. I did not have any cracked or weak board. Some of the pieces were a little rough but I sanded them down a bit and they were fine.
